EN8 Steel Grade Supplier in India
EN8 Round Bars, Flats, Billets & Ingots
What is EN8 Steel?
EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel containing approximately 0.36–0.44% carbon. It provides good tensile strength, reasonable wear resistance and excellent machinability, making it suitable for shafts, gears, bolts, studs, axles and forged components. EN8 can also be induction hardened to improve surface wear resistance.
Known for its excellent combination of strength, machinability and toughness, EN8 offers significantly higher strength than mild steel while remaining economical and easy to machine. EN8 corresponds to BS970 grade 080M40 and is one of the most commonly used carbon steels in India and worldwide.
EN8 Chemical Composition
| Element | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.36 – 0.44 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 – 1.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.40 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Sulphur (S) | ≤ 0.05 |
EN8 Mechanical Properties
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 550–800 MPa |
| Yield Strength | 280–465 MPa |
| Hardness | 150–255 HB |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Machinability | Good |
| Weldability | Moderate |
Key Advantages of EN8 Steel
Higher Strength
EN8 provides superior tensile strength and load-bearing capability compared to low-carbon (mild) steels.
Excellent Machinability
Highly suitable for turning, milling, drilling and CNC machining operations.
Good Wear Resistance
Can be flame or induction hardened for significantly improved surface durability.
Cost-Effective
Offers a perfect balance of engineering performance and affordability.
EN8 Heat Treatment
EN8 can be heat-treated to further improve its mechanical properties.
Normalizing
Refines the grain structure and provides a uniform, harder structure than annealed condition.
Hardening
Can be hardened by quenching in water or oil depending on section size.
Tempering
Used after hardening to relieve stresses and achieve desired balance of hardness and toughness.
Induction Hardening
Highly responsive to induction hardening for creating wear-resistant surfaces on shafts and pins.
EN8 for Forging Applications
EN8 is extensively used by forging units because it offers:
- Good forgeability
- Reliable mechanical properties
- Economical production costs
- Excellent machinability after forging
Forged EN8 components are widely used in general engineering and agricultural machinery.
Common Applications
- • Shafts and Axles
- • Gears
- • Bolts and studs
- • Connecting rods
- • Spindles and Couplings
- • Agricultural machinery
- • Automotive components
- • General engineering parts
- • Forged components
EN8 Equivalent Grades
| Standard | Equivalent Grade |
|---|---|
| BS970 | 080M40 |
| AISI/SAE | 1040 / 1045 |
| DIN | C40 / C45 |
| EN | C40E |
| JIS | S40C |
* This is important because many buyers search for 1045 or C45 rather than EN8. They are widely accepted equivalent grades for most general engineering applications.
EN8 vs Mild Steel
EN8 offers significantly higher strength and wear resistance than standard mild steel due to its higher carbon content (0.36-0.44% vs typically under 0.25%). EN8 can also be hardened and tempered, whereas mild steel cannot achieve significant hardness through heat treatment.
EN8 vs EN19
| Property | EN8 | EN19 |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Medium | High |
| Toughness | Good | Excellent |
| Alloys | Unalloyed | Chromium, Molybdenum |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical Use | General Eng. | Heavy Eng. |
EN19 is preferred when components require significantly higher strength and fatigue resistance.
